Nails are My #1

No matter how busy I am, I try to carve out a few hours each week to do two things: get my nails and hair done. But do not get it twisted, the two are not created equal. I love them both but the hair salon is my sidepiece. Here are some of my reasons why the nail salon is my number 1:

1)My nails are all-weather. It is never too hot to get my nails done. Is it me or did it get really hot really quickly? Thinking about sitting under anybody’s dryer makes me cringe. Weather conditions have never been much of a factor with my weekly commitment to the nail salon. I have trooped through snow and rain to get my mani /pedi knowing it would still be on tact. Similarly, sweat never made my nails look tragic.

2) My nails never make me look silly. can go swimming or to the beach with my nails did. Face it there are just certain places you look silly with your hair done- anywhere that reeks of chlorine and salt water counts. And if you know the assholes I know, you’re getting dunked or thrown in. If you have
a kid like mine, you may have to jump in to catch him/her. So you would simply just be wasting your time keeping a hair apt pre-beach or pool.

3) Nails work with my busy schedule. Nail salons understand you have a life. If I make an appointment w/Kim at 1pm, she is ready. If I walk-in and if she is busy, she lets me know how long the wait will be. Hair salons expect you to give up your life. You are supposed to be willing to sit around for hours to a great style that may or may not last and some hot gossip. And that’s great but not every week. My nails look beautiful all the time and I don’t have to be away from my daughter all day!

4) Nail salons offer their all. The extras are unbeatable. Nails, massages and waxing in one place. Even if I had an attitude going in, I’ll be relaxed coming out.

5) Nail salons get creative. All of the pretty colors excite me. Each week I experiment with different colors and designs. Who doesn’t want their main thing to switch it up and keep it exciting?

What are your thoughts? Which one gets the number 1 spot?

Things I Love Right Now: My Rihanna Playlist

Confession: My Rihanna playlist may be one of the hottest on my iTunes.Just think about it. Not only is she a bad chick, she has a lot of catchy, feel HOT tunes that are good for the gym, the beach, a long commute or even the bedroom( but then again I’m always a hot mama).

Her sassy attitude, sex confidence and love of fly shoes are something all of us fly mamas can co-sign. While we may not be 23 anymore, we are still hot!!! Throw on some Rih, sexy shoes and passable voice and go to work!

New School Rule: Unleash your creativity

I grew up getting spankings. Or rather my older sister did. I generally learned from seeing my mother handle my sister if necessary. So for the most part I listened. I got a few pops and pow-pows here and there but I did not want the belt or the stacatto lectures that accompanied them. ( you know DON”T. YOU. EVER. DO. THAT. ANYMORE. That was then. My kid on the other hand is my only child and spankings or the fear of them don not necessarily move he. She is independent, curious and fearless. I have to reason with her instead of threatening her with the pow-pow. She gets time outs and lost privileges. She has asked me not to pow-pow her and use this method instead. It works for us- generally. However, if she is not open to these approaches, I have discovered one other thing that works- the leash. Yup the kid leash!

No. I do not use the leash and do not plan to. But when I wanted my daughter to stop doing something that could have been rather dangerous, it helped. I simple told her “stop or when we go out, I’ll have to use a leash on you.” She stopped in her tracks. SUCCESS!!!

Things I Love Right Now: Zara Kids

My five year old is a fashionista. She picks out her own clothes and even hopes to design clothes herself. As a serious shopper, I tend to encourage her passion for fashion. Zara Kids is one of our favs(perhaps because she shares her name with the store).

Yes. I pushed my Hello Kitty obsession on her. Sorry!!!!

She loves the floral print and I love the fact that these remind me of the 90′s!

I love the color on these sandals and the fact that they are not “too grown” for a 5 year old. If left to her own devices, the Star would walk around in kiddie heels ala Suri Cruise.

Love this orange color for the summer!

Aww so cute. 1 time for kid fashion. For more check out Zara Kids!

Welcome to the New School!

This blog is my mom’s fault.  Shortly, after I became a mom she jokingly called me “New School”.  At first I was offended- “new” can’t possibly be positive but then I thought about it. It makes no sense for me to attempt to subscribe to what anyone thinks I should be as a mother or a woman.  My mom is right-  I am a new school mama.

I am a master multi-tasker. I can put it down in the kitchen but I generally prefer to wait until holidays or Sundays. When my kid was in a stroller, I pushed her in stilettos on occasion. I never fasted hip-hop, sports or my love of shoes because I have a child. In fact, the Minime appreciates these things with me. I can properly use a time out as well as the black mom look. I am fluent in teenagese and baby talk. I always look for ways to incorporate technology into my parenting but I make sure her library (full of real books) is extensive. While encouraging my daughter to pursue her dreams, I am making mine a reality. And I know I am not alone.

When I look around, I am surrounded by some of the most awesome mamas. They are entrepreneurs, attorneys, writers, artists, wives and amazing mothers. Basically, a bunch of fly girls that became fly mamas. New school mamas. This is for you. Welcome to the new school. Feedback and comments are appreciated.
